Start with safety
Electricity and water are the most immediate risk. Avoid entering standing water where outlets, extension cords or panels may be involved, and do not use appliances in an affected area until conditions are confirmed safe.
Stop the source when it is safe
If the water is coming from plumbing, closing the fixture shut-off or the main supply valve limits the volume. Envelope leaks cannot usually be stopped from inside, so the focus shifts to containing the water indoors.
Protect what has not been affected
Move dry belongings out of the area, lift items off wet flooring, and open doors between affected rooms only if it does not spread contaminated water.
- Relocate documents, electronics and textiles first
- Place foil or blocks under furniture legs to prevent staining
- Keep foot traffic through contaminated water to a minimum
Record what you can see
Photographs taken before items are moved help establish the condition of the property. Note when the water was discovered and any action already taken.
Arrange a moisture assessment
Surface drying is not the same as structural drying. A measured assessment establishes how far the water travelled and which materials are actually affected.
